Freelancer clients are more selective and require a higher quality of work from freelancers than Fiverr. Let’s face it. A client paying $5 on Fiverr does not expect the same level of detail and accuracy as a client paying $50 on Freelancer.
The advantage of Freelancer is you can be proactive and pursue clients by searching and placing bids on projects. Using Fiverr you have to passively sit back and wait for buyers to contact you. Most of the services for freelancers are free on the site. You receive 8 free big opportunities a month. There is however a 10% fee on all fixed and hourly projects with the minimum fee being $5. There is a small project fee charged by Freelancer as well. Freelancer also offers a membership program with fees ranging from 99 cents a month to $69.95 based on the number of bids, skills, and project upgrades that a user wants to offer.
Payment on Freelancer operates as follows. The first withdrawal on Freelancer takes 15 days but subsequent withdrawals can be placed anytime and are processed at 5pm Eastern Standard Time on Sundays and Wednesdays.
Work with Upwork
Upwork is comparable to Freelancer.com with freelancers bidding for both hourly and fixed price jobs. Upwork offers a wide variety of higher paying jobs in web development, mobile development, design, writing, administrative support, accounting, marketing, finance, customer service, sales, writing, IT, legal, and more. Upwork has a free basic membership plan and a Freelancer Plus plan that allows you to bid on more projects for $14.99 per month. The free basic plan charges 15 cents per connect. Connects are required to bid on jobs with each job requiring one to six connects.
Upwork has a more complicated fee structure. Freelancers have to pay:
- 20% for the first $500 you bill your client.
- 10% for all billings with client between $500.01 to $10,000.
- 5% for all billings that exceed $10,000.
Upwork pays freelancers 10 days after the project completion date. Funds can be directly deposited to a bank account, Paypal, or Payoneer for United States freelancers.
I have used both Fiverr and Upwork for freelancing opportunities. I have just started using Freelancer and will let you know my experiences. My favorite site for freelancing is Fiverr because of its ease of use, quick delivery, and high volume of repeat business. I have used Upwork as well dating back to its days as Elance and oDesk. My biggest gripe with Upwork is the bidding process which requires the purchase of connects. There is also a greater amount of competition for jobs where some freelancers may underbid you with incredibly low rates. Upwork does however make it easier to build a long term relationship with a client resulting in ongoing project work.
